Senior recital a sure sign of spring

Three exceptional performers took to the virtual stage

Putting on a senior recital is no easy task. Putting on a virtual senior recital is much more work.

Props to Chelsie Li ’21, Jiho Shin ’21, and Dorit Wang ’21, who pulled off the feat on April 17, 2021, sharing an evening of music with the global MHS community in a sure sign of spring . Chelsie, Jiho, and Dorit performed their recital for nearly an hour, singing and playing songs from several genres, and leaving no doubt about their talents or dedication.

Jiho and Dorit, accompanied by MHS Director of Music Debbie Duff on piano, opened the evening by singing “Abends, will ich schlafen gehn,” from Engelbert Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel. Chelsie, also accompanied by Ms. Duff, then followed by singing 可能否 “(Could It Be)” by 木小雅.

Dorit and Jiho returned to sing You Never Know, by BLACKPINK, this time with Dorit playing the piano. Jiho and Chelsie, accompanied by Ms. Duff, then followed with “The Flower Duet” from the opera Lakmé, and Dorit returned to play the “Adagio cantabile,” from Beethoven’s Sonata Pathetique.

Next, Jiho sang two songs, accompanied by Ms. Duff on piano and MHS Instrumental Music Instructor Rob Sanzone on drums. The first was “Habanera,” from Carmen, and the second, “Sarangga (Love Song)” from Chunhyangga, a traditional Korean story. She followed by singing the Korean pop song “Butterfly,” to an instrumental track by Loveholics, the group that originally performed the tune.

Chelsie and Dorit closed the performance by singing Safe & Sound by Taylor Swift and others, also to an accompaniment by Ms. Duff.

The evening was a wonderful way to close out Term 5. Great job, everyone!
